Ask yourself the following questions. Answer truthfully (we can’t hear you). If you can’t say yes to the following, your PR program made need some help:
- Do you have a written public relations plan? Public relations and communications are important…don’t wing it. Carefully craft a long-term, methodical public relations plan. Best is to get the help of an Accredited Public Relations professional from the Public Relations Society of America. (Vilocity’s VP is an APR).
- Is there a single individual or department in your company who manages all communications with the media? This senior communications person should have ready access to the senior managers in your organization.
- Do your key communications personnel have some type of formal training in marketing communications and/or public relations? If possible, a communications department or executive should be educated in public relations, active in professional associations, and up-to-date on professional literature in communications.
- Are messages to customers, suppliers, employees, and shareholders all correct and support your organization’s vision, mission and values? Your corporate communications should reflect who you are as a company.
- Do you track, analyze and measure comments about your company in the media? Make sure your communications plan builds in components of research, measurement and ongoing evaluation.
- Are you proactive in telling good news? Do you have a crisis plan that guides you during times of bad news? Responding appropriately helps maintain your company’s reputation and credibility.
When it comes to corporate communications, if you “wing it” you can damage your company’s image, lose sales and lower employee morale. So make a credible public relations plan and stick with it in both good times and bad.
